CLAN 101: Buddhist Literary Chinese I

This is an introductory course that provides students with the opportunity to learn the basics of Buddhist Literary Chinese in preparation for more in-depth study of Chinese Buddhist texts. The course assumes no knowledge of written or spoken Chinese. From the beginning of the course, students work with sentences from Buddhist texts, learning the characters, vocabulary, and grammar in context. Over the course of the semester the excerpts studied introduce new grammar and vocabulary and become progressively longer and more complex. Assessments include quizzes, exams and evaluation of class participation.
