Panel 2: Intelligence and the Technological Developments 

Title: What Is It, Exactly, that Is “Artificial” about AI?

Biography

Adam Goldstein was a visiting scientist at the Levin Lab, where he worked on cancer research, and was the co-founder and Chairman of Astonishing Labs. Previously Adam founded Hipmunk, wrote tech books for O’Reilly, and was a Visiting Partner at Y Combinator. 

Abstract

What is it, exactly, that is “artificial” about AI? Is it the fact that it is built out of software and hardware, or is it something about how its perception works, or something about how it interprets and acts on its experiences? Currently, AI systems are “artificial” in all of these ways—and in other ways too—but this may not remain the case forever. This presentation will attempt to disentangle the different meanings of artificiality, and explore which of these are inherent to digital systems, and which are a result of present-day human design decisions grounded in dualistic scientific philosophies. The presentation will conclude with an overview of what could become possible with new ways of designing and training AI systems, informed by alternative philosophical approaches.

Title: The Study of Apparent Selves 

Biography

Bill Duane is the principal at Bill Duane and Associates, a consulting firm focused on innovation. He helps organizations and individuals execute well in ambiguity and rapid change through innovation mindset, managing complexity and resilience. He works with leading companies including tech, pharma and media.

He teaches innovation and AI workshops at Stanford’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design and is the Director of Strategy and Implementation at the Center for the Study of Apparent Selves, working on applied AI ethics, funded by a two-year Templeton Foundation grant. He holds a Research Fellowship at Kathmandu University as part of this effort.

He was an engineering executive at Google for nine years, leading the production engineering teams for websearch infrastructure and then Google Workspace (gmail, docs, calendar, etc.) responsible for scaling these services worldwide during hypergrowth. After becoming curious about burnout, performance and culture, he started a second career at Google, establishing the role of Superintendent of Wellbeing and creating successful programs to explore the intersection of performance and human flourishing for the following five years.

He is on the advisory board of Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute, a Fellowship Advisor to the Just Economy Institute and advisor to several for-profit and nonprofit startups.

Abstract

As members of the Center for the Study of Apparent Selves, whatever we participate in can be seen to converge in a vision of humans as interconnected, transformative, and dynamic beings—profoundly capable of care. Inspired and informed by this emergent vision, we seeks to cultivate an understanding of and means for, human flourishing that are applicable to a broad range of societal and environmental contexts—health, education, peacebuilding, caring for the biosystem, etc. 


Panel 4: Translations and Perspectives on Discerning the Real 

Title: The Task of the Dharma Translator in the Age of AI

Biography

Daniel Patrick McNamara joined RYI as a researcher in 2018 but first connected with the school and its founder—Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche—in 2001. Daniel earned an MA from the University of Chicago Divinity School and a PhD in West and South Asian Religions from Emory University. His doctoral dissertation—Nihilists and Noble Ones: Ratnākaraśānti’s Engagement with Nāgārjuna, Mādhyamikas, and the Mahāyāna in the Madhyamakālaṃkāravṛtti—examines the philosophy of the Indian Buddhist scholar-saint Ratnākaraśānti (c. 970-1040), particularly his critiques of Madhyamaka philosophy and his presentation of a single Mahāyāna view. Daniel’s research at RYI concerns the influence of Ratnākaraśānti’s philosophy in Tibet and the development of “other-emptiness” (gzhan stong) doctrines.  

Daniel has taught MA-level classes at the Candler School of Theology and BA classes at Emory University; he has also taught the Carleton-Antioch Buddhist Studies in Bodh Gaya Program. Subjects taught include translation methodology, methodology of Buddhist Studies, Pramāṇa Theory, Madhyamaka Philosophy, Sanskrit, and classical Tibetan. 

Abstract

The title of this talk is adapted from Walter Benjamin’s 1921 “Die Aufgabe des Übersetzers” (“The Task of the Translator”), which argues that literary translation is an art in itself and is not somehow subservient to the source being translated. This talk takes Benjamin’s argument as a point of departure for a broader consideration of the theory and practice of Dharma translation in current times. In particular, this talk will focus on the roles, opportunities, and potential new challenges we face in the age of increasingly sophisticated translation tools. This survey of theoretical and practical aspects of Dharma translation is intended to stimulate informed conversation about the issues facing translators today. 

Within this general discussion, this talk will argue two specific points: first, the rise of translation technology increasingly encourages translators of Dharma literature to serve more as “editors” than “translators,” but this shift in emphasis does not lessen the importance of just the sort of creativity that Benjamin wrote about just over one hundred years ago. Second, this talk argues that in the age of AI Dharma translators must remain especially attentive to the roles of transmission and meditative cultivation when engaging in translation. 


Panel 6: Instances of Indigenous Tibetan AI and the Scholar-Practitioner Perspective 

Title: An Exploration of Embodied Ethical Wisdom in Action 

Biography

Diane Denis joined RYI’s research team in 2017. She brought expertise in the areas of Buddhist philosophy, Tibetan and Sanskrit languages as well as contemplative arts. She became involved in the RYI Public Talk Series in 2018. 

Prior to her research appointment at RYI, Denis worked at Laval in the Department of Religious Studies, and at Naropa University and Acadia University in the performing arts departments. While at Laval, she founded a Buddhist study group 2008-2013, and at Naropa founded the Student Union and served as coordinator 1993-1995.  She is the founder of a charitable organization based in Canada called The Sahle O Project (1996) involved in giving access to higher education for young women as well as the founder of the Wandering Yogic Wisdom Art Festival (WYWAF) based on 25 years in artistic research. 

She works on translations in connection with both Yogācāra and Madhyamaka Thought examining its possible contemporary relevance/applications. Some of her latest research with the ICRC on the interface between Maitreya’s work and the IHL brought her to recently join a group doing research on Buddhism and the refugee crisis. She is also involved with her colleague Julia Stenzel in a series of discussions looking at ways to develop experiential learning at RYI and in Buddhist Studies and with professional artists interested in contemplative approaches to the creative process. 

Abstract

What is embodied ethical wisdom? And how do we foster it in ourselves and in others? 

In this talk, I look at some possible guidelines in training scholar-practitioner and translators where traditional and contemporary pedagogies are combined. I am particularly interested in the benefits of what is now called “contemplative education”, a set of pedagogical practices designed to cultivate wholesome awareness with which personal growth, learning, creativity, ethical living, enthusiasm, and caring for others are also nurtured. At the very heart of this discussion is the question of embodiment, sensory experience, and wisdom. Interestingly enough, the field of Artificial Intelligence is also concerned with embodiment. Influenced by the work of Micheal Radich, I explore theories and possible models beyond the hardwire materialistic presumptions particularly helped by the rich lens of Buddhist traditions where body and mind are neither the same nor different.

Title: The Study of Apparent Selves 

Biography

Elizaveta Solomonova, Ph.D., is an interdisciplinary researcher in McGill University’s Neurophilosophy Lab, at the Division of Social and Transcultural Psychiatry. Dr. Solomonova is interested in neuroscience and phenomenology of conscious experiences across the sleep and wake states, including dreaming, hallucinatory phenomena, parasomnias, and altered states of consciousness. She has extensive experience in research on dreams, sleep, memory consolidation, and meditation practices: she holds a Ph.D. from the University of Montreal in Psychiatry and Philosophy, and an MSc in Experimental Psychology. Dr. Solomonova is trained in cognitive neuroscience and in philosophy of mind, and is particularly interested in hybrid states of consciousness, where waking and dreaming boundaries are blurred. Her most recent projects are centred around questions of how the social world influences how and when people sleep, dream, and share experiences across cultures and social groups.

Title: The Study of Apparent Selves

Biography

Iman Gurung grew up in the Himalayas near Gorkha, walking two hours a day to primary school. Iman left home at the age of eleven to join the nearest high school, situated a four-day trek from his village. After high school, Iman won the Ministry of Education “State Education Scholarship of PR China” for a Clinical Medicine degree (MBBS) at Peking University. Following the obtainment of his Clinical Degree, he joined the European Neuroscience Institute researching Neuroendocrinology under Prof. Marjan Rupnik and Prof. Erwin Neher (1991 Noble Laureate in Medicine and Physiology). Iman was awarded the Gates Cambridge Scholarship and completed a PhD in electrophysiology studying membrane potential control of g-protein coupled receptors signaling from Cambridge University. This was followed by six years of Research Fellowship with Prof Christopher Huang, working on identifying the genetic and molecular bases of cardiac arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death.

Following the April 2015 earthquake, Dr. Gurung returned to Nepal. Through a cabinet decision by Prime Minister Sushil Koirala’s office, he was appointed a Special Advisor to Deputy Prime Minister/Home Minister Bamdev Gautam in charge of coordinating the rescue and relief operations of the National Disaster Centre. Currently, Dr. Gurung works as a political, economic, and national security advisor to a number of prominent politicians, as an investor in different hydropower projects totaling 1000MW, and as the Chief Investment Advisor for the largest Industrial Park in Nepal (China-Nepal Friendship Industrial Park). He also runs a boutique consulting company building a nationwide geodetic GNSS real-time network in collaboration with the Department of Mines and Geology, Government of Nepal, and a small IT company developing different applications related to Value-added services and Cloud-based solutions to Nepal Telecom and Vodafone.

Panel 6: Instances of Indigenous Tibetan AI and the Scholar-Practitioner Perspective 

Title: Sensing Altruistic Awakened Agency: Curating Transformative Experiences with Smart and Kind Devices in Buddhist Traditions 

Biography

James Gentry is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies. He specializes in Tibetan Buddhism, with a particular focus on the literature and history of its Tantric traditions. He is the author of Power Objects in Tibetan Buddhism: The Life, Writings, and Legacy of Sokdokpa Lodrö Gyeltsen, which examines the roles of Tantric material and sensory objects in the lives and institutions of Himalayan Buddhists. 

James’s research ranges across Tibetan and Himalayan intellectual history, material culture, contemplative and ritual practice, scriptural translation, revelation, and canonicity, from the Tibetan imperial period to the present. His current projects include a study of the reception in Tibet from the ninth century to the present of the Five Protectors (Pañcarakṣā)—a set of five Indian Tantric Buddhist texts that have been among the most popular scriptures used for pragmatic purposes throughout the Buddhist world. James is also doing a study of a comprehensive literary treatment of Himalayan religious material culture: a twentieth-century compilation entitled A Treatise on the Paraphernalia and Musical Instruments of the Old School of Secret Mantra. His work on this compilation is directed toward the creation of a multimedia encyclopedia of Tibetan Buddhist material culture for use among scholars, teachers, and students of Asian religions.   

Before joining Stanford, James was on the faculty of the University of Virginia. He has also taught at Rangjung Yeshe Institute’s Centre for Buddhist Studies at Kathmandu University, where he served as director of its Master of Arts program in Translation, Textual Interpretation, and Philology. He has also served as editor-in-chief of the project 84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha, which aims to commission English translations of the Buddhist sūtras, tantras, and commentaries preserved in Tibetan translation and publish them in an online open-access forum. 

Abstract

This paper discusses some of the resources Buddhist traditions may have at their disposal to contribute novel solutions to pressing problems in AI research and technology by considering how Buddhists have sought to transform human experience through curating sensory encounters with material objects that function as dynamic extensions of altruistic awakened agency. Described in traditional Tibetan settings in terms of images, statues, temples, books, amulets, pills, and other objects specially designed to embody the power to “liberate” and heal through seeing, hearing, wearing, tasting, or otherwise connecting with them through body and mind, this range of “smart” (and “kind”!) sensory objects, still very much in use today, invite comparisons with contemporary conversations in AI research concerned with the ethics and wisdom of AI devices and device learning. The discussion draws from indigenous Tibetan literature that describes the nature, creation, and use of these Buddhist sensory devices, before attempting to draw comparisons to some of their contemporary analogs in the field of AI research and technology and considering some of the implications of this comparison for our future.   


Panel 3: A Meta Perspective on Scholar-Practitioner 

Title: Bodhisattva AI: Opportunities and Challenges

Biography

John D. Dunne (PhD 1999, Harvard University)  holds the Distinguished Chair in Contemplative Humanities, an endowed position created through the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.  He is also a distinguished professor in the Department of Asian Languages & Cultures, where he recently served as department Chair.  

John Dunne’s work focuses on Buddhist philosophy and contemplative practice, especially in dialog with Cognitive Science and Psychology. His publications appear in venues ranging across both the Humanities and the Sciences, and they include works on Buddhist philosophy, contemplative practice and their interpretation within scientific, philosophical and cultural contexts.   

John Dunne speaks in both academic and public contexts, and his public engagements often include Gomde Austria and Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe. In addition to serving as core faculty in the Center for Healthy Minds, he is a Fellow and former Board member of the Mind and Life Institute, a contributor to Mind and Life Europe, and an academic adviser for the Rangjung Yeshe Institute. 

Abstract

A distinguished group of collaborators at the Center for the Study of Apparent Selves have proposed a novel model that, by relating care with intelligence, enables us to imagine something like a “Bodhisattva AI.” This talk explores key features of the theory that leads to this possibility while also asking some key questions that highlight the challenges faced by this bold proposal.


Panel 3: A Meta Perspective on Scholar-Practitioner 

Title: The Ongoing Need for Buddhist Constructive Reflection, Past and Present 

Biography

John Makransky, PhD, has been an Associate Professor of Buddhism and Comparative Theology at Boston College, Senior Academic Advisor for Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche’s Centre of Buddhist Studies at Rangjung Yeshe Institute in Nepal, president of the Society of Buddhist-Christian Studies, and Fellow of the Mind and Life Institute. 

John’s academic writings focus on connections between devotion, compassion, and wisdom in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism, on adapting Buddhist practices to meet contemporary minds, and on theoretical issues in interfaith learning. In the 1990s, John was one of the leaders of a scholarly movement in the American Academy of Religion to establish a unit dedicated to Buddhist Critical-Constructive Reflection (“Buddhist Theology”). John has also developed the Sustainable Compassion Training model of contemplative practice (SCT) to help modern Buddhists, people of diverse faiths, and those in caring roles and professions generate a more sustaining, inclusive, and unconditional power of compassion and awareness to support their lives and work (https://sustainablecompassion.org). 

Abstract

There are various ways Buddhist scholar-practitioners and communities in Asia, now also in the West, have freshly applied Buddhist concepts and practices to address a variety of perceived needs and problems of their societies. The talk then zeroes in on socially engaged Buddhism as one modern example of Buddhism applied to contemporary problems. As a Buddhist scholar-practitioner who has also been involved in socially engaged Buddhism, I suggest some ways that it has made important contributions, through its innovative ways of integrating Buddhist principles with modern disciplines to address social problems. I also suggest problematic ways that socially engaged Buddhism, in some forms, risks accommodating itself so much to modern (non-Buddhist) assumptions and values that it may lose part of its ability to critique them, or to offer important alternatives to them from a Buddhist perspective.

Title: Artefact Minds and Synthetic Selves: Reality Enriched in Fernando Pessoa and the Buddhists

Biography

Jonardon Ganeri is the Bimal. K. Matilal Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto. He is a philosopher whose work draws on a variety of philosophical traditions to construct new positions in the philosophy of mind, metaphysics, and epistemology. His books include The Self: Naturalism, Consciousness and the First-Person Stance (OUP 2010), presenting a new theory of self; Attention, Not Self (OUP 2017), a study of early Buddhist theories of attention;  The Concealed Art of the Soul (OUP 2012), an analysis of the idea of a search for one’s true self; Virtual Subjects, Fugitive Selves (OUP 2020), an analysis of Fernando Pessoa’s philosophy of self; and Inwardness: An Outsiders’ Guide (Columbia 2021), a review of the concept of inwardness in literature, film, poetry, and philosophy across cultures. His new book, Fernando Pessoa: Imagination and the Self (OUP 2024) brings the ideas of the Portuguese poet into dialogue with Indian philosophical poetics. He joined the Fellowship of the British Academy in 2015 and won the Infosys Prize in the Humanities the same year, the only philosopher to do so. He delivered the 2024 John Locke Lecture at the University of Oxford, entitled Seeing in Sanskrit (OUP, forthcoming).

Abstract

Are artefact minds genuine minds? Is simulated consciousness real consciousness? And are synthetic selves true selves? Long before the advent of AGI and LLMs the poet Fernando Pessoa answered this last question in the affirmative, creating in poetic imagination a host of what he calls heteronyms. And, as I will show in my talk, long before him the idea had already been prefigured in India, in Buddhism and the epic philosophical tale, the Yoga-vāsiṣṭha, and its story about a second Līlā. 


Panel 1: A Philosophical Perspective on Buddhism and AI 

Title: Dimensions of the Scholar-Practitioner in Buddhist Literature 

Biography

Julia Stenzel earned an MA in Buddhist Studies from the University of the West, Los Angeles, and a PhD from McGill University, Montreal, Canada. She received a monastic contemplative education in the Tibetan Karma Kagyü tradition from the late Lama Gendun Rinpoche, a Mahāmudrā master from Eastern Tibet, who established several monasteries and retreat centers in France. She spent a decade in three consecutive three-year retreats at Dhagpo Kundrol Ling. 

Her research areas include Buddhist ethics, Buddhist contemplative traditions, and the Buddhist-science dialogue in the context of compassion cultivation. She has taught academic and Dharma classes on these and related topics. In addition, she regularly participates in translation projects and is a member of the Sakya Pandita Translation Group, the Chödung Karmo Translation Group, and the Subhashita Translation Group. 

She supervised research activities at Rangjung Yeshe Institute on Losar, the Tibetan New Year, and on Buddhist meditation traditions. 

Abstract

A presentation of the scholar practitioner in Buddhist literature, based on the three triads of [1] study, contemplation, and meditation (thos bsam sgom gsum); [2] exposition, debate, and composition (‘chad brtsod mtshom gsum); and [3] being knowledgeable, disciplined and kind (mkhas brtsun bzang gsum).   


Panel 5: Pedagogy and Deep Learning at the Time of AI 

Title: Reimaging Longchenpa as a Pedagogue 

Biography

Justin Kelley currently serves as the Executive Director of the Tergar Schools and Tergar Institute projects. In 2021, he completed his PhD from Rice University’s Department of Religion where he studied with Dr. Anne C. Klein, professor of Religious Studies. His general interests include meditative and philosophical systems in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism, phenomenology, contemplative studies, and learning theory.  Justin’s research focuses on different types of personal transformation, how we cultivate these transformations, and what is born from them. His dissertation specifically focused on Longchen Rabjam’s ontology of purity within the context of the Great Completeness. It is part of a larger project that aims to explicate a genealogy of purity within Buddhist history at large. In addition to Buddhist theory and practice, Justin is also deeply interested in the learning process and pedagogy. His teaching philosophy is grounded in a transformative approach to learning and pedagogies that are engaged and applied. Regardless of setting or subject, Justin aims to create inclusive and empathetic learning experiences—both in-person and in the digital sphere—that recognize the entirety of human experience.  While at Rice University, Justin taught multiple courses sponsored by the Khyentse Foundation focusing on Tibetan language, culture, and religion. He also served as an advisor to and lecturer for Rice University’s Boniuk Institute of Religious Tolerance, emphasizing the enhancement of religious literacy in secondary schools. 

Abstract

This paper examines the pedagogical implications of Longchen Rabjam’s Dzogchen teachings, emphasizing openness and spaciousness in learning and teaching. Reimagining Longchenpa as a pedagogue, I argue that his work serves as a guide for transformative learning through spacious awareness, a central theme in his presentation. 

Drawing from transformative learning theory, particularly the works of Jack Mezirow and Patricia Cranton, I show how their emphasis on open-ended learning methods aligns with Dzogchen’s experiential approach. Longchenpa’s Precious Treasury of Philosophical Systems highlights the interplay between space and effort in Dzogchen, where space is experienced as the mind’s vast, open quality. This spaciousness encourages learning free from rigid goals, fostering natural insights and transformation. 

By shifting focus from mastery to relaxed engagement, Longchenpa’s teachings promote a pedagogy rooted in trust—trust in the mind’s inherent wisdom and openness. I conclude by discussing how Mingyur Rinpoche’s Tergar Schools and Institute integrate Dzogchen-inspired principles, offering a contemporary example of how ancient wisdom meets modern educational needs. 

Ultimately, Longchenpa’s Dzogchen teachings inspire innovative approaches to teaching, demonstrating that spacious awareness can transform both meditative practice and educational methodologies. 


Panel 1: A Philosophical Perspective on Buddhism and AI

Title: Buddhism, AI, and the Hard Problem of Consciousness 

Biography

Klaus-Dieter Mathes is a professor of Buddhist studies at the University of Hong Kong. His current research deals with exclusivism, inclusivism, and tolerance in Mahāyāna Buddhism. He obtained his Ph.D. from Marburg University in 1994 with a study of the Yogācāra text Dharmadharmatāvibhāga (published in 1996 in the series Indica et Tibetica). From 1993 to 2001 he served as the director of the Nepal Research Centre and the Nepal-German Manuscript Preservation Project in Kathmandu. Before joining the University of Hong Kong in August 2023 he was the head of the Department of South Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist Studies at the University of Vienna, where with his team he hosted the 2014 conference of the International Association of Buddhist Studies. He has organized and given presentations at many other conferences and symposiums and has served as the chairman of the board of trustees of the Numata Professional Chair for Buddhist Studies, University of Vienna, and is now a Professor at the University of Hong Kong. 

Abstract

Even in the era of AI, proponents of a naturalistic account of life struggle to answer profound philosophical questions: Who or what measures and calculates? Without a mind, how can we truly understand this? How do we explain intention, free will, and morality? Recent research indicates that intelligence and consciousness are not solely products of material, and electrochemical processes, suggesting that humans are more than just advanced robots. In addressing the hard problem of consciousness, Buddhist scholars engage in an ongoing dialogue with scientific models that avoid reducing mind and matter to each other.  

This presentation will explore the role of human experience in the current discourse on the ontic and epistemic interpretations of Schrödinger’s wave function, as well as neuroscientific and medical studies involving experienced meditators. These studies reveal that systematic mental training can lead to physical changes in the brain and the biochemistry of our cells. Such findings suggest a complex interplay between mind and matter in a dynamic process of dependent arising. According to the Buddhist philosopher Nāgārjuna, this interdependence implies emptiness in the sense that all components lack independent existence.

Biography

Khenpo Pema Namgyal was born in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal in 1986. When he

was nine years old he was ordained by Kyabje Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche at Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery. He studied in the monastic college, the Sangye Yeshe Higher Shedra for nine years. Upon completion of his Shedra studies in 2007, he became a Lopon and began teaching the monastery’s monks. In 2013, based on his qualifications and personal achievements, he was awarded the title of Khenpo from Kyabje Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche.

Since then Khenpo Pema Namgyal has been teaching at Rangjung Yeshe Institute, Sangye Yeshe Higher Shedra, and Gomde centers around the world.

Title: The Pros and Cons of Becoming a Scholar-Practitioner

Biography

Khenpo Pema Woser was born near the border between Tibet and Nepal in a region known as Tsum. After the tragic death of his mother, Khenpo-la left his home in order to study and practice the Dharma and joined Tergar Oseling Monastery, located near the great stupa of Swayambunath. Shortly after, and at the encouragement of Mingyur Rinpoche, his root guru, Khenpo Pema Woser joined the monastic college at Sherab Ling monastery. Since completing his traditional monastic studies and receiving the title of Khenpo in 2010, Khenpo Pema Woser has worked closely with Mingyur Rinpoche to realize his vision at Tergar Osel Ling, primarily teaching logic, debate, and epistemology, and serving in various leadership roles.  

In addition to the traditional course of study, Khenpo-la has studied many important practice systems. This includes those described in the Great Five Treasuries by Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye as well as numerous commentaries on Mahamudra. These transmissions and teachings have come from great masters such as His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Tai Situ Rinpoche, and Mingyur Rinpoche.

Title: A Scholar-Practitioner Perspective 

Biography

Lopon Chopal Gyatso was born in Kathmandu. At the age of 11, he joined Kanying Shedrub Ling Monastery and began his traditional monastic studies. After completing his monastic school (sheyrim), he entered Sangye Yeshe Shedra, where he underwent nine years of philosophical training and graduated as a Lopon. Since then, he has been teaching at the monastic school, the Nagi Gonpa nunnery, and offering guidance to local students through Dharma Gyan Vidhyalaya. In addition to these roles, Lopon Chopal Gyatso is also a teacher at RYI, where this year he is teaching Ngeshe Dronme (“Beacon of Certainty”). When asked about his aspirations, Lopon expressed his deep commitment to serving the precious Buddhadharma and his hope to continue benefitting all sentient beings to the best of his abilities. 

Abstract

The Beacon of Certainty (Tib. nges shes sgron me) is a commentary composed by the 19th-century scholar Mipham Rinpoche. It is structured around seven questions, including practical issues of everyday practice. Because of its thoroughness in addressing the foundations of the Nyingma tradition, from Madhyamaka philosophy to the view of Dzogchen, it is a key text studied in virtually all Nyingma shedras. Lopon-la will use this text as a base to discuss the topic of AI from a traditional perspective.

Title: Interpreting and Interpreter Training in the Age of AI 

Biography

Maria Vasylieva is an Assistant Professor at RYI. She is a Tibetologist, dharma translator, and interpreter. She is a RYI TTP and MA TTIP graduate and holds PhD degrees in Political Science and Buddhist Studies. She has been teaching at RYI since 2018. She has also taught foreign policy and international relations at the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine and most recently—Sanskrit textual studies as Khyetse Foundation Chair in Buddhist Studies at the International Buddhist College of Thailand. Maria’s academic interests include research and translation of Mahāyāna sūtras and śāstras, in particular comparative textual studies of Dunhuang manuscripts and Tibetan canonical collections. 

Abstract

In the recent past, computer-generated translations could only be laughed at. However, now Large Language Models (LLMs) and Neural Machine Translation (NMT) technologies are used to translate entire books while Dragon Speech Recognition (DSR) and InterpretBank serve to support remote simultaneous interpretation. It is already a reality for our colleagues in the centers for translation studies worldwide to receive student homework translations generated or assisted by AI. Sanskrit and Tibetan are not available on Google Translate or DeepL. However, Tibetan is already included into ChatGPT, and it seems to be just a matter of time when it will also be covered by AI tools for interpreting. What are the threats AI presents to the interpreter-training programs? Will the role of future interpreters be reduced to serving as reviewers “cleaning up” rare mistakes of the computer mind? It is important to consider these pressing questions when envisioning the future of interpreter-training programs and start adapting them to the new realities. I believe that there is a potential way to do it by emphasizing the skills that set interpreters apart from software: their motivation and critical judgment rooted in their language competencies, their contextual knowledge and cultural sensibilities, as well as their ability to create.

Title: Navigating Buddhist Paths and Computer Algorithms: AI’s Role in Dharma

Biography

Matt Lindsey is a data scientist in public healthcare in the United States. He volunteered with 84000, working on AI-related projects such as neural machine translation and other topics in data science and computational linguistics. Recently, he presented a pilot project on evaluating manual translations using both traditional data science and modern AI tools to Andreas Doctor, Jeff Wallman, and Celso Wilkinson. In his work with 84000 and the broader Buddhist community, he senses both excitement and hope for the possibilities AI offers. With his background in both Buddhism and technical fields such as computer science and mathematics, he hopes to discuss the technical applications of AI through an engaging, lighthearted, and meaningful presentation that serves as an “Introduction to AI in Buddhism”. 

Abstract

My goal for this presentation is to ensure that participants leave with a shared vocabulary for AI, a conceptual understanding of how AI models operate in the cloud, and an awareness of the commonalities among various algorithms. Most importantly, I aim to equip participants with the knowledge to discuss AI models authoritatively and to ask critical questions of developers. This will enable the Buddhist community to maintain authenticity and accuracy when using these tools for scholarly and spiritual purposes.

Biography

Michael Levin, a Distinguished Professor in the Biology department at Tufts, holds the Vannevar Bush endowed Chair and serves as director of the Allen Discovery Center at Tufts and the Tufts Center for Regenerative and Developmental Biology. Dr. Levin is the Developmental Biology and Regenerative Medicine Lead at the Center for the Study of Apparent Selves. Dr. Levin’s laboratory studies the computational decisions that biological systems make to establish a place in and adapt to their environment. Through his research, he has explored the inherent ability of biological systems to process information, and their capacity for plasticity at all levels – from the population to the organism to the organs, cells, and molecular pathways with them.

Title: Agency Without Agents: Towards a Buddhist Computational Phenomenology of Purposeful Behavior 

Biography

Nadav Amir is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute. He obtained a PhD degree in computational neuroscience from the Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

His research aims to elucidate the fundamental computational principles underlying experience-based learning of purposeful behaviors. He adopts a transdisciplinary approach, harnessing tools from fields such as behavioral neuroscience, reinforcement learning, control, and information theory to formulate and test ideas inspired by Buddhist philosophy of mind.

Abstract

Our goals fundamentally shape how we experience the world. For example, when we are hungry, we view objects in our environment according to whether or not they are edible (or tasty). Alternatively, when we are cold, we view the very same objects according to their ability to produce heat. Traditional AI models of purposeful behavior, such as reinforcement learning, posit that cognitive agents are endowed with fixed and pre-defined conceptual schemes, called state representations, that enable them to ascertain which features of their current situation are relevant for a particular task. Here we propose an alternative approach, based on Dharmakīrti’s notion of arthakriyā, in which state representations are not assumed veridical, or even pre-defined, but rather emerge from agents’ goals through interaction with their environment. We introduce a novel notion of goal-oriented, or telic, states – defined as classes of goal-equivalent experiences – and use it to develop a parsimonious computational account of purposeful behavior, in which the descriptive and evaluative aspects of experience are inherently coupled. This approach offers a fresh perspective on recent findings in cognitive neuroscience and the problem of goal formation and selection. Taken together, it provides a step towards a Buddhist-aligned computational phenomenology of purposeful behavior through the lens of goals.

Title: Wisdom Beads and CSVs

Biography

Ngawang Trinley is the founder and director of a number of online immersive Tibetan learning initiatives that employ the latest pedagogical methods, and he has contributed to the development of Tibetan language computer-assisted translation tools. He is advising the project on our Translator Training Program syllabus and  on our Translation Memory development.

Ngawang Trinley was born on a mountain farm in Provence, France. He was enrolled in a Buddhist school as a young child. When he was sixteen, he traveled to India to study Tibetan language, philosophy, medicine, and Kālacakra cosmology and astronomy. After eight years of study, he was placed in charge of the library at the College of Buddhist Sciences in Sherabling, where he also taught the Tibetan language to Tibetan monastics and lectured (in Tibetan) on cosmology and astronomy.

Ngawang Trinley co-founded Esukhia in 2009; he is the director of the branch in India and serves on the Board of Directors. He has also proofread and edited the digital edition of the Derge Kangyur for 84000. Ngawang works for Buddhist Digital Resource Center as the digitization project manager, where he is in charge of digitizing texts (scans and etexts) and creating and maintaining relationships with users and partners. He is the creator of translation tools, including a real-time collaborative online environment for translation work, proofreading software, and a Tibetan language spell-checker. Ngawang’s online Tibetan courses, designed to be thoroughly immersive and based on international standards of translation competencies, are used by the Kumarajiva Project to train their translators.

Olaf is also External Faculty at the University of Tokyo, Ritsumeikan University, the Chiba Institute of Technology, Hokkaido University, and the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Paul Colognese is an independent researcher specializing in AI Alignment, leveraging a robust background in mathematics. His primary focus involves developing a theory of agents and their goals, with the goal of informing the creation of tools and methods for detecting and controlling these objectives. Colognese’s research addresses critical issues such as deceptive alignment in AI systems. Additionally, he explores topics including AI interpretability, meditation, compassionate agents, and technological singularity. Outside of research, Colognese enjoys learning, exploring nature, dancing, and indulging in contemporary art. He holds a PhD in mathematics from the University of Warwick, UK.

Title: Buddhism and Intelligent Technology: A Futures Meditation in Three Movements 

Biography

Peter Hershock is the Manager of the Asian Studies Development Program (ASDP) at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawai’i.  In his work with ASDP, he designs and directs higher education faculty and institutional development programs that seek to mainstream the study of Asian cultures and societies in the undergraduate classroom.  In connection with his work in the Professional Development Program at the Center, he has collaborated in designing and hosting international education leadership programs and research seminars that critically examine the relationships among higher education, globalization, equity, and diversity. Most recently, he has helped launch the Center’s initiative on Humane Artificial Intelligence, with a focus on the societal impacts and ethical issues raised by emerging technologies.  Trained in Asian and comparative philosophy, his research and writing draw on Buddhist conceptual resources to reflect on and address contemporary issues of global concern. 

Abstract

Intelligent technology is radically transforming human-technology-world relations, and its impacts on Buddhist scholarship and practice will likely be greater than those of the transition from orality to literacy. This talk will reflect on the future of the Buddhist path in the age of AI in three movements. The first will sound a cautionary note, focusing on the digitally mediated attention economy and risks of offshoring intelligent human practices to AI. The second and third movements will strike explicitly constructive tones. The second will imagine how Buddhist scholarship and practice might be positively supplemented by the use of AI tools. The final movement will consider the possibility of a Buddhist reorientation of the science-technology-society relationship and will enjoin epistemic humility in fostering any AI-assisted turning of the wheel of the Dharma.

Biography

Thomas Doctor received his BA and MA degrees in Tibetan Studies from the University of Copenhagen and his PhD in Buddhist Studies from the University of Lausanne. He has studied Buddhist philosophy at Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery since the late 1980s and serves as a senior translator for the lamas and scholars there. Thomas’ main research interests are the pāramitā and mantra views and practices of Buddhism in India and Tibet. He has translated several classics of Buddhist philosophy, including Speech of Delight (Ju Mipham’s commentary to the Madhyamakālaṃkāra) and Ornament of Reason (Mabja Jangchub Tsöndrü’s commentary to the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā). Thomas contributes to the 84000, an ongoing project to translate the Tibetan collection of the Buddha’s words and associated treaties into English.

Biography

Professor Waldron teaches courses on the South Asian religious traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism, Tibetan religion and history, comparative psychologies and philosophies of mind, and theory and method in the study of religion. His publications focus on the Yogacara school of Indian Buddhism and its dialogue with modern thought. Professor Waldron has been at Middlebury College since 1996. His monograph, The Buddhist Unconscious: The Ālaya-vijñāna in the Context of Indian Buddhist Thought, was published by RoutledgeCurzon in 2003. 

Abstract

The most challenging aspect of engaging Buddhist traditions over the forty years I have been studying and practicing Buddhism has been the proliferation of knowledge. We now know more, and in more ways, about Buddhist traditions than ever before, and this raises more questions than answers. Much the same can be said about our more general modes of generating knowledge: we have created a disciplinary Tower of Babel, wherein these ever-increasing modes of knowledge become ever less able to communicate beyond their own siloed subspecialties. How can basic Buddhist principles, such as dependent arising, dependent designation, the two truths, and mere perception (vijñapti-mātra)—provide some guidance for navigating these dynamic causal and informational pathways? I will compare and contrast models of Buddhist knowledge with models of scientific cooperation, with a special focus on Indian Yogācāra traditions.
